OTHER ATTRACTIONS

Apart from wildlife parks, and major towns in Uganda, there are other attractions that are worth a visit. These include Lakes, rivers, mountains, swamps, Sanctuaries, islands and much more.

MABAMBA SWAMP

Famous for the Shoebill bird. Other common birds found include; African jacana, Blue breasted bee-eater, Long tailed cormorant, Papyrus gonolek, Hammerkop, Grey headed kingfisher, Northern brown throated weaver bird and many others.

Getting there:

Boat tour across Lake Victoria or by road (1 hours drive) – located 40km away

SOURCE OF THE NILE

The source of the Nile has become a thrilling adventurous and wonderful place due to the many adventure activities on the Nile found in Jinja the “Adventure capital of East Africa” For the Enthusiasts and adventurous, Jinja is the right place!

Horse riding, Bunjee Jumping, Quad biking, Whitewater rafting, Kayaking, Sunset cruise,

By road, a few kilometers away from Kampala – 2 hours drive.

ZIWA RHINO SANCTUARY

Home to Uganda’s Rhinos – also a breeding program which will see these endagered creatures re-introduced back into the wild

Activities: 

Rhino trekking, Nature walks, Birding, boat cruises.

Getting there:

By Road – a 2 hours drive from Kampala via Hoima masindi route.

BIGODI WETLAND SANCTUARY

The birder’s paradise & home to the great Blue Turaco. Other birds found here include; Papyrus Gonoleks, Hornbills, Waxbills, Weavers, Cuckoos, Kingfishers and the Flycatchers

Guided swamp Walks, Bird watching.

Getting there:

By road, via Fort portal Kibale – close to the national park.

MABIRA FOREST RESERVE

One of Uganda’s rain-forests, with a number of tree species and birds.

Activities: 

Bird watching, primates tracking, zip-ling, nature walks.

Getting there:

By Road – 56 km from Kampala on Jinja road.

SSEZIBWA FALLS

Known as a Buganda Heritage Site on ssezibwa river.

Activities: 

Bird watching, camping, rock climbing, nature walks, hiking, canoeing.

Getting there:

By road, via Jinja road, located 32 km east of Kampala city in Mukono District.

LAKE BUNYONYI

A place with many little birds and  one of the most beautiful parts of the country – commonly known as the Switzerland of Africa. 

Activities: 

Bird watching, canoeing, hiking, cultural visits, swimming

Getting there:

By Road – 6 hrs drive from Kampala via Masaka Mbarara route.

NGAMBA ISLAND CHIMP SANCTUARY

Home to over 48 orphaned chimps & part of the Koome group of islands. Excellent place to enjoy chimpanzee habituation.

Day trips, Chimpanzee habituation, Long stay visitor programs

Getting there:

Via Lake Victoria on a speed boat which departs daily from Entebbe Zoo.

SSESE ISLANDS – LAKE VICTORIA

An Archipelago of 84 islands found on the north-western part of Lake Victoria – The Ssese islands are a perfect place for your honeymoon

Getting there:

The Islands can be accessed most easily by ferry from Entebbe and near Masaka

LAKE KATWE

One of the crater lakes found in south western Uganda – also known to be a salt lake.

Activities: 

Salt Mining

Getting there:

The Salt lake is surrounded by Queen Elizabeth national park, visitors will use any route going to the park to access the crater lake.

EXPLOSION CRATERS – WESTERN UGANDA

Dozens of beautiful explosion craters in western Uganda formed due to volcanic activity many years ago. Found in fort portal, Kibale, Ndali, Bunyaruguru and Katwe areas.

Activities: 

Hiking, Bird-watching, sight seeing, Nature trails.

Getting there:

Via fort portal, Kasese route or via Mbarara Kasese route towards Queen Elizabeth park.

KABAKA’S LAKE

The Kabaka’s Lake is the only and largest man made lake in Uganda. Constructed in the early 1880’s during the reign of Ssekabaka Mwanga II.

Getting there:

Located in Ndeeba near the Kampala city Centre.  It is a few minutes’ drive from Bulange Mengo.
